Economics of Environment Management Systems : A Quality Cost Perspective

Journal

First International Conference on Emerging Trends in Engineering & Technology, IEEE Computer Society USA, 2008

Author

Dr. R. P. Mohanty & Mr. S. B. Jaju

Abstract

There is a growing need for industries to become accountable for their actions towards the environment.  In order to make it possible, it is required to develop comprehensive, integrated and progressive environmental policies.  These environmental policies would maintain dynamic environmental equilibrium.  Today there is requirement by the National and International bodies to have standardised environmental management systems (EMS) These systems would keep the records of all environmental issues pertaining to the organisation.  The EMS is made simple through the introduction of the ISO 14000 series ISO provides guidelines on how to successfully manage and reduce environmental impacts through management functions, while at the same time allowing for high levels of socioeconomic growth and dedication to sustainable development.  The implementation of EMS through ISO 14000 series would involve the expenditure.  Every organisation is interested in economic aspects before the implementation of any system.  They want that the system should provide the financial benefits, which will motivate to keep going on.  This paper discusses economic aspects for the implementation of ISO 14000 an EMS tool in any organization with the help of cost of environment concept.  The paper presents the concept of quality cost being applied to justify the implementation of EMS.

A two-identical unit deterirating standby system with two types of workload and three types of repair

Journal

Decision Sciences in Global Enterprise Management Proceedings : ISDI USA - January 2009

Author

Dr. Kirti Arekar

Abstract

In the present paper, we analyze a two-identical unit deteriorating standby system model having two types of workload i.e. normal and fast.  The system works under varying workload.  When workload is more the standby also starts operation and the system becomes parallel until the workload decreases.  The unit may be repairable under normal and fast repair mode.  Using regenerative point's technique different measures of reliability are obtained.

Title

Reliability of the system with varying workload and fast repair by using weibull failure and repair time distribution.

Journal

International Journal of Productivity, Quality and Reliability : ISI Calcutta – October 2008

Author

Dr. Kirti Arekar

Abstract

Reliability model with varying workload and fast repair are studied.  Initially, one unit is operative and other is kept as standby.  When workload increases a fast repair facility is available.  Study has been made about two-identical-unit deteriorating standby system when workload increases arbitrarily for some random duration.  Failure time distributions of the units are assumed to be exponential with different parameters, while repair time distribution are arbitrary i.e. time dependent.  Using regenerative point technique, the measures of reliability are obtained.

Traditional Knowledge Integration : Learning in Community-based Dispersed Cross Functional Teams

Journal

Bharati Vidyapeeth University's IMED Journal of Management & Social Research. Vol.1, No1, PP324 – July, 2008

Author

Dr. R. P. Mohanty & B. Satapathy

Abstract

Organizational learning helps to enhance the ability to develop new, innovative products and processes that respond to existing or emerging needs.  This often requires combining previously disconnected bodies of knowledge in a better way.  One way to do this is through dispersed cross-functional  teams, as these can combine diverse knowledge sources.  However, empirical studies from distinct research streams have shown that members' heterogeneity and geographic separation both hinder effective sharing and use of knowledge in groups.  We explore this through a qualitative study of dispersed cross-functional teams in a product development setting in a traditional handicraft enterprise.  We studied the development process in a project with significant complexity.  Our findings suggest that knowledge diversity presents both constructive and constraining influences on the ability of a learn to learn.  Noting that individual members of dispersed cross-functional teams are simultaneously members of learning and social communities, we discovered that team members rely substantially on different members of their community to access specialized knowledge.  One challenge for this team thus appears to be the need to establish it self as a new mini-community of practice, so as to integrate their knowledge effectively.  Our analysis aims at a theoretical framework related to learning in dispersed traditional community-based, cross-functional teams.  We also discuss implications for managing and leveraging knowledge diversity in such a setting.

Material Handling Equipments: Trends

Journal

SEARCH October 2008

Author

Prof. (Dr) V.V.Sople

Abstract

Role of material handling equipments is very crucial in supply chain. The one of the important flows to management in the supply chain is inventory flow. The speed of the inventory flow in the warehouse or shop floor very much depends on the types of material handling equipment. The market opportiunity potential of the inventory flow system can be greatly enhanced by using right type of material handling equipment. The Material Handling Equipments are mechanical devices for handling of goods with greater ease and economy. These equipments are mechanical, semi–automated or fully automated and do not restricted to forklifts, shelf pickers, motorized pallet jacks (hand trucks), tractors, and other specialized industrial trucks etc. The material handling equipments are used at both micro and macro level. In the warehouses and workshops the throughput is comparatively low and pay load capacities are low. However, at port where material in bulk is handled in short span of time, material handling equipments used are of mega size and are fully automated ensuring the human safety. Imagine supplies needed to feed the famine affected region of a country or ammunitions required at war front but having no means to unload or distribute the goods. In operation ‘Desert Storm’ the cranes, forklifts, and container handlers unloaded and distributed over 37,000 ISO containers and 500 thousand tons of ammunition. In short with the non availability of suitable Material Handling Equipment the material cannot be made available to the customers or end user, whenever required. Hence, the delays will cause losses may be human, money or both. In most cases the material is handled manually. However, technology can reduce manpower requirements, ensure human safety and enhance the productivity potential of the system.

Emotional Intelligence-Self Regulation as one of its factors

Journal

SPECTRUM an E-Journal of KBSCMR, Kohinoor Business School Vol.10, October, 2008

Author

DR. R.P. Mohanty & Prof. Shamira Malekar

Abstract

The second component of emotional intelligence as per Goleman is self-regulation.  This is an ongoing conversation people have with themselves, which frees them from being prisoners of their feelings.  People with a high degree of self-regulation are more capable of facing the ambiguities of an advancing industry then those whose degree of self-regulation is low.  Furthermore people with a high level of self-regulation can help to enhance the integrity of an organization by not making bad decisions through impulse behavior.  Self-regulation will help individuals stay in control of their feelings and make thoughtful decisions.  Emotional intelligence is based on the idea that one must first become aware of our emotions before one is able to alter one's behavior for better results. Studies show that managers who maintain a high level of self-regulation posses more aspects of EQ and are therefore rated as more effective by both superiors and subordinates.

Self-Regulation is not getting carried away with emotions, but rather objectively managing them in order to take control of the subsequent actions resulting from these emotions.  By acknowledging our emotions, one can manage them; deal with them and then move on.  This is very difficult for some people to do.  It is much easier at times to just ignore, derty or rationalize your emotions.  It is crucial, however, for us to develop an understanding of what we are feeling in order to use our emotions intelligently.

This research paper emphasizes on comparing the three Pioneers on their views of Self Regulation and also finding the similarities of their views on the topic.

Emotional Intelligence – Social Relationships

Journal

SFIMR Research Review. Vol.5, PP 37-47

Author

Dr. R. P. Mohanty & Prof. Samira Malekar

Abstract

Mere formation of an organization is not a sufficient guarantee for the achievement of its potential benefits.  It is imperative to anlyze why a cooperative social relationship is essential for the success of an organization.  The sense of community has a powerful, tangible impact on the ability of all types of associations to generate energy and capital intellectual, financial, and other kinds.  Strong interpersonal relationships fostered by open and honest communication, agreement on common values, shared visions, expectations, identification of roles, accountability, understanding of the decision-making process, resolution of conflicts, compromise, mutual respect and trust not only improve existing relationships but also help build new relationships that are lasting and fulfilling thus contributing to an organization's success.  Relationships act as glue that binds people and motivates them to volunteer, engage and willing to commit and contribute to the resources of the group.

Astate business leaders have embraced the ethos of social relationships, spotting its potential for triple bottom line benefits: profit for the economic bottom line, the social bottom line and the environmental bottom line.  There are various business organizations that have fostered strong relationships within and outside and have become master of the game.

Dr. R.P. Mohanty, Mr. R. R. Lakhe & Ms. S. B. Jaju

Abstract

One of the most effective tools for evaluating the success of a quality management programme is the measurement of quality costs (prevention, appraisal and failure costs).  The application of the concept of quality costs originated in the early 1950s.  A systematic approach is needed for measuring quality costs.  This paper describes a case study to capture quality costs in a manufacturing company.  An appropriate framework is proposed for capturing quality costs and statistical analysis is carried out to characterize trends and relationships between various components.  In this paper, we have demonstrated that quality cost should not be seen as solving a problem with a unique definition, but rather that there exists and whole space of reasonable nations of quality improvements, and that these notions can be seen as actionable guidelines to successfully implement TQM program

Abstract

Organized Retail in India has seen a remarkable growth in the last decade. In addition to the blossoming economy one of the major drivers of this strong growth trajectory can be attributed to the rapid mall development in the country. This study based on interviews with practicing retailers, mall managers and secondary data, tries to understand the analytical and financial steps that are undertaken before setting up mall, sources of financing a mall and the sources of revenue and expenditure. On the basis of the findings, some suggestions are also put forth to enable a better relationship between tenant and mall management and to ease the growing pains currently faced by the malls in India.

It will fetch revenue for the state both in Indian and foreign currency. This will enable the government to have a greater aggregate disposable income to moot its social programs, improve its infrastructure, employment potential and thereby improve the quality of life of the populace. Above all it will generate employment, create an enhanced aggregate disposable income and thereby revive the falling fortunes of Kerala’s economy.

Mall Shopping and Gender: An analysis of regional differences in purchase patterns and shopping orientation among Indian youth.

Journal

BVP's IMED Journal of Management and Social Research, Vol 1, No.2,08

Author

Prof. Shelja Jose Kuruvilla

Abstract

India has witnessed a boom in organized retail trade in the last decade. The retail format which has shown the maximum growth among all is the multipurpose shopping center or the mall. It is well know that this format is a favorite haunt of the youth in the current generation and it is also likely that malls are an epicenter for evolving an altogether new consumption culture within the country. Therefore, it is of utmost interest to the retailers and academia alike to understand the consumer dynamics behind this newly evolving consumption culture.
India not only has its own cultural identity which is very different from that of the west but also offers a rich diversity of cultures within the country. This study therefore addresses gender related regional differences within the country in consumer behavior and explores the shopping habits of the youth in order to identify and contrast possible differences. The findings suggest that in India there is a blurring of gender differences in the youth across all regions.

Prof. Shelja Jose Kuruvilla & Mr. K. Rajan

Abstract

Indian Retail is generating considerable interest within the country and abroad. A good percentage of this retail growth is fueled by the youth in the country. Organized retail, best represented by the mushrooming malls, has come to play a defining role in building and supporting this veritable base of retail consumers.  Therefore, it is of utmost interest to the retailers and academia alike to understand the consumer dynamics behind the newly evolved consumption culture. This study seeks to address how Indian youth behave in the Mall. It has attempted to identify the recreational and utilitarian orientation among Indian youth and examined gendered differences in their attitude to the malls. It also addresses the mall patronage patterns and gender related regional differences within the country in consumer behavior. Prior research in this area stems form the west and the first part of the paper explores the existing literature to formulate the research questions. In the analysis no major differences in the attitude or motives of both genders for shopping in malls but there is evidence to suggest that purchase of fashion differ across sexes. In all, the study questions the fundamental stereotyping of shopping as a feminine activity.

“Hanging out at the mall- Shopping orientation of young mall consumers”

Journal

Indira Journal of Management, 2008

Author

Prof.Shelja Jose Kuruvilla,

Abstract

Very little is known about the characteristics of the mall shoppers in India and the question “Who are the mall shoppers?” remain unanswered. Moreover, very little academic material is available on the Mall shopper behavior. In India, the youth form an immensely significant market segment. The census figures for 2001 show that 54% of the population is below the age of 251  and 45%, below 19 years. The post-liberalization generation has grown up largely without any guilt about consumption and considerable spending power. The economic importance of  the youth to marketers and perceived difficulty in understanding and communicating with them has called for research that can provide new insights.

Abstract

A gap is the difference between two constructs.  Many gaps exist in services marketing; a difference between what is communicated to consumers about a service and what consumers receive; a difference between what managers believe consumers expect; and so on.  Such gaps are important to study as they may impact the performance of the firm.  This paper aims to explore segmenting customers on the basis of demographics to realize identifiable service quality fragments.  The scope of this study is only limited to life insurance business.  This paper further aims to develop a comprehensive multidimensional and hierarchical model measuring service quality in the life insurance industry based on an extensive literature review and qualitative research, which is consistent with the conceptualizations in the literature.  In this model, service quality is a third-order construct which is composed of several dimensions (variables) and sub-dimensions (items or factors).  Our Model has important implications for the measurement of service quality in this specific industry as well as for the development of marketing strategies for life insurance business as it is to be finally proposed upon investigating which parameters affect service quality.
