It is well known that Consultants play an important role in the industry as well as in the economic development of the country. Further there is a paradigm shift in the Consulting industry in the last few decades in the country and Consulting sector has positioned itself as one of the promising areas.
The demand for Consulting in various sectors of economy as well as in emerging areas has tremendously increased in general and for Technical Consulting in particular in last few years. The growth and demand has been further fuelled by entry of Foreign Consulting Firms in the country as well as India being considered as preferred destination for Engineering Process Outsourcing (EPO) due to its technical and cost competitiveness. As per the report on EPO sector carried out by Engineering Export Promotion Council, the Indian EPO market has the potential to assume a size of $25bn - $30bn annually by year 2015 from the current level of $3.2bn – $3.4bn.
Besides EPO sector there is large requirement for Technical Consultants in different segments naming a few are-Engineering, Knowledge Process Outsourcing and Biotechnology. This has created a huge demand for Technical professionals in the Consulting industry.
Further Industry expectations in today’s competitive environment is that professionals engaged need to assume the responsibilities in a short span of time. Realizing this need Consultancy Development Centre, an Autonomous Institution of Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology, has taken the initiative to introduce a “Certificate Program in Technical Consulting” to fill the gap between demand and industry expectations on one hand and to equip Technical professionals with all the facets of handling assignments right from marketing to execution.

Consultancy Development Centre (CDC) is an Autonomous Institution of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) of Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, working towards promoting and strengthening Consultancy skills and capabilities including export of Consultancy Services. CDC is also the nodal agency in the Asia Pacific region for the Technical Consultancy Development Program for Asia and the Pacific (TCDPAP), a Program promoted by the United Nation Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
Programme Objectives
- To prepare professionals for a career in Technical Consulting
- To impart basic technical consulting and project management knowledge to
professionals desirable for a career in Technical Consulting
- To equip technical professionals with practical aspects and overall skills including
managerial skills required for a career in Technical Consulting
- To prepare professionals working in consulting organizations, industry and

Delivery
The course delivery model shall be through contacts classes and online mentoring. The contact classes shall be held at at ITM Executive Center, “Ganesh Complex” First floor, 393, Annasalai Road , Teynampet, Chennai – 600018 on alternate Sundays.

- Effective Communication, Presentation and Negotiation Skills
(Technical consultants have to Communicate, present proposal / solution / progress of project to the clients, effectively negotiate with clients at the time of contract award as well as on some important issues during implementation of the project. In view of this knowledge of these soft consulting skill become important for Technical Consultants)
- Marketing of Technical Consulting
(How to sell the idea/concept to client? Successful marketing covering Technical requirements of client organsiations are prime factors for Technical Consultants ,these will be supported through practical assignments/case studies to provide practical insight)
- Preparation of Proposal including Costing Consulting Services
(Preparing a proposal with accurate cost estimates are the main and important considerations for a Technical Consultant. This aspect becomes more so important in case of Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) / Lumpsum Turnkey (LSTK) jobs. In-depth knowledge of Technical Proposal preparation with right costing of consulting services is therefore essential for Technical Consultants)
- Delivery Process
(Execution of a project within cost and time-frame work is related with effective planning, monitoring and controlling the project activities in various stages of the project using project management techniques. How to deliver assignments without cost and time overrun are the most essential aspects in execution of the project for Technical Consultants to win the confidence of client organizations and build future relations. These aspects will be discussed through a well –structured case study along with a visit to a multi-disciplinary Consulting firm to understand the process and concepts of effective delivery as well as have idea of practical problems one faces during the execution)
Duration :3 months (January’10-March’10)
Eligibility : B.E. / B. Tech /AMIE/M.C.A or Equivalent Technical Qualification (Those passing out in 2010 can also apply) or Diploma in Engineering or equivalent with two years experience

Evaluation
There will be internal Assessment as well as a three hour written test at the end of the course. Those securing atleast 50% marks (C grade) in the overall evaluation would become eligible for award of certificate by CDC.
Programme Fee
Programme fee is Rs.10,000/-(Ten thousand only). The fee is to be paid by cheque/ demand draft drawn in favour of “Institute for Technology & Management” payable at Chennai.
