How to Make a Career in Medical Lab Technology?

Medical Lab Technology (MLT) is one of the career options that you can consider right after 10+2. Qualified MLT professionals come with skillset that makes them indispensable for the healthcare industry. They have the knowledge and skills to carry out tests on body fluids such as blood, urine, saliva, etc. and provide accurate technical details about their chemical and biological profiles.

This information is critical to diagnosis and treatment of different medical conditions and diseases. A physician or surgeon will not be able to carry out their jobs beyond treating minor ailments if the medical reports of various health parameters of a patient are not available. A lab technician conducts tests on the body fluids in his laboratory as per the prescribed norms and provides the necessary details and analysis of the results. Based on the information and insight, the doctors choose the line of treatment.

As a career option, the job of a lab technician is important but not as stressful or demanding as some other roles in the healthcare industry may have. For example, a doctor may begin to feel the pressure of his job as he goes about providing medical treatment to sick people day in and day out. A nurse may also feel tired and exhausted after caring for patients during her shift in a hospital or nursing home. Sometimes, the condition of patients can be extremely pitiable and therefore disconcerting for a medical practitioner.

Although a lab technician works in a healthcare facility, his job does not require him or her to be dealing with the patients beyond a few minutes when the sample of the body fluid is to be taken from the patients for testing. He may have to work intensively during his shift but he works in his laboratory which is peaceful devoid of the rush and pressure of a hospital.

ITM Institute of Health Sciences (ITM IHS) offers Bachelors of Science in Medical Lab Technology at some of its campuses, most notably in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.  At its Vadodara campus, even an MSc in MLT course is available.
