Overview of B.Sc Medical Lab Technology

Medical Laboratory Technology is an allied health specialty concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases through the use of clinical laboratory tests. The course aims to provide the candidate with adequate knowledge and skills to carry out routine laboratory diagnostic procedures and some sophisticated laboratory diagnostic procedures. Before a doctor can properly detect and treat a disease, he/she needs accurate information about the patient’s condition. The role of a Medical Laboratory Technologist is to provide this information through the application of Clinical Laboratory Science.

In an age where man is constantly susceptible to more and more diseases, as a consequence of unhealthy lifestyle, pollution and over population, a Medical Laboratory Technologist is often the first-line medical professional in the battle for better health. Medical Laboratory Technology (also known as Clinical Laboratory Science) is an allied health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease through the use of clinical laboratory tests.

Career Opportunities

After completing this program, a candidate would have sufficient theoretical and practical knowledge related to the principles of the laboratory exercises and also to deal with new advances in instrumentation, methodology or standardization, management of laboratories, standard protocols and use of technology. They work in the areas of phlebotomy, biochemistry, hematology & blood banking, pathology, microbiology and histopathology & cytotechnology.

Eligibility

The candidate should clear class XII Science examination (PCM/PCB).

Eligibility for lateral Entries:
The candidate should have passed class XII (Science) and Diploma in MLT

Duration of the course:

4 years comprising of 3 academic years of study (6 semesters) and 1 year of clinical experience / internship.
