Nursing is a lucrative discipline to be studied. The career options that follow from degrees or courses in nursing are broad, ranging from basic medical care, e.g. bathing the patient, administering medicines to serving as assistants in critical operations or surgeries. However, for students being introduced to such courses for the first time, it becomes imperative to choose wisely the institutions and the courses one is applying for. Along with a proper degree, a reputed nursing college also provides the required practical knowledge and industry and hospital exposure to the candidates who are willing to serve a good cause of saving life.

The two types of Courses Generally found in Nursing College in Maharashtra

a) Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery – A diploma course whose focus is on the study of health care to be provided to hospitalized individuals. The scope includes training in setting up hospital equipment, preparing the Operation Theatre, learning the nuances of medicines to be administered to patients. These graduates are mainly trained to cater to the interests of women, children and elders. Also, it is a one year diploma course that can be availed from any reputed nursing college in Maharashtra.
b) General Nursing and Midwifery- This module is far simpler compared to the previous one. Specializations are not required in this field. The course scope encompasses a comprehensive and rudimentary understanding of general health care, nursing and midwifery. The course, unlike ANM is to be undertaken for a period of three and a half years.

Admission criteria for degrees in nursing in colleges in Maharashtra

These two courses and the respective certificates obtained, at the end of the day, are of equal weightage in service areas. Also, the admission criteria for various universities specializing in nursing in Maharashtra can differ. Few have been compounded to quench queries.

  • A pass certificate from The Higher Secondary School Certificate Examination from the State Board of Maharashtra needs to be present of Standard 12. Minimum of 45% marks is required to qualify for the entrances, at least. Albeit, for Backward Classes, 35% is the minimum cut off.
  • Despite a certain candidate having previous experience of an ANM course, he/she needs to have passed the 10+2 standard examination.
  • The minimum age limit for applying for such admission tests in any nursing college in Maharashtra is fixed at 17. Maximum age limit is 35 years.

There are multiple nursing colleges in Maharashtra, which offer degree courses to students. However, to make sure that one still acquires a basic idea about the requirements for admission, few general thumb rules can definitely be followed for an optimum performance.
