A healthcare profession relating to the eye, its parts and vision, optometry includes a complete examination of the visual system to estimate refractive errors. It also covers fitting, manufacturing and supplying of spectacles, contact lenses and all other optical aids.
Optometrists are primary healthcare professionals who are institutionally educated and clinically trained in the art and science of optometry. They are required to examine the visual system, diagnose, prescribe and provide remedial corrective treatment. If any pathological condition is detected during the examination, the optometrist refers the patient to an ophthalmologist (ophthalmic surgeon) for medical therapy and/or surgical correction.
With technological advancements and newer products being introduced in quick succession, optometrists have wide scope beyond prescribing corrective measures. Continuous knowledge enhancement and thorough professionalism is expected from them. Our courses are designed to provide aspirants the right tools and skills for excellence in this field.
In India, optometry as a profession is still in its nascent stage. There is a severe shortage of qualified optometrists. With the formation of a regulatory body and government recognition of optometric programs, the career graph of an optometrist is bound for a steep ascent. Establishing a strong base in this growth stage promises a successful future for aspirants.
The remuneration for professional optometrists at the start of their careers is about Rs. 20,000 per month. In addition, several incentives are provided and the amount can vary based on individual capabilities.
