Optometry is an independent profession in eye care. Its practice includes a complete examination of the visual system required for the estimation of refractive errors. It also covers the Fitting, manufacturing and supplying of spectacles, contact lenses and all other optical aids.
“ Optometry is a health care profession that is autonomous, educated and regulated (licensed/
registered), and optometrists are the primary health care practitioners of the eye and visual
system who provide comprehensive eye and vision care, which includes refraction and dispensing,detection/diagnosis and management of disease in the eye, and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system. “ - World Council of Optometry
Optometrist:
An optometrist is a primary health care professional who is institutionally educated and clinically trained in the art and science of optometry. He is required to examine the eyes and the visual system, diagnose the visual problem, prescribe and provide remedial, corrective treatment.
If any pathological condition is detected during the examination, the optometrist refers the patient to an ophthalmologist (ophthalmic surgeon) for medical therapy and/or surgical correction.
Optometric practice does not only include the determination of the refractive status of the eyes, prescribing and dispensing of glasses, it has a wider scope than that. With the advance of technology, and newer products being introduced in quick succession, an optometrist is also required to upgrade his knowledge continuously. For an optometrist to be a thorough professional, his optometric education through the proper channels is very important.

Remuneration:
A professional optometrist gets a starting salary as high as Rs, 15000 per month. This amount may go still high depending upon his capabilities. In addition, several incentives are also provided. With the establishment of a regulatory body and the recognition of all optometric programmes by the Government, the salary graph of an optometrist is bound to take a steep upward rise.
The profession of optometry is in a growing stage in India. There is a severe shortage of qualified optometrists in India. In the incipient stage of this career, any student who gets employed as an optometrist now, will ind oneself in a very good position when the career gets its proper foothold in India. The future of the profession is very bright.

Before a doctor can properly detect and treat a disease, he/she needs accurate information about the patient’s condition. The role of a Medical Laboratory Technologist is to provide this information through the application of Clinical Laboratory Science.
In an age where man is constantly susceptible to more and more diseases, as a consequence of unhealthy lifestyle, pollution and over population, the Medical Laboratory Technologist is often the first-line medical professional in the battle for better health. Medical Laboratory Technology (also known as Clinical Laboratory Science) is an allied health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease through the use clinical laboratory tests.
Five major areas of a clinical laboratory:
1. Blood banking
2. Clinical Chemistry (chemical analysis of body fluids)
3. Hematology (study of immune system) and,
4. Immunology (study of bacteria and other disease organisms)
5. Microbiology (study of bacteria and other disease organisms)
They also work in the areas of cytotechnology (study of human tissue), phlebotomy, urinalysis,
coagulation, parasitology and serology.
Phleotomists draw and test blood where as Blood bank technologists determine correct blood
types for transfusions. Histology technicians cut and stain tissue samples.

Career Path:
As an MLT, you can live and work virtually anywhere. Unlike some professions, there is a need for medical laboratory technologists in both big cities and smaller communities.
Most medical laboratory technologists work in hospitals, but jobs are also available in:
• private laboratories
• community health clinics
• public health facilities
• university research labs
• biotechnology companies
• specialty labs, e.g. in vitro fertilization labs
In each of these work settings, management positions are available. Some MLTs go into teaching and train the “next generation” of medical laboratory technologists. Others become very involved in research and contribute to the worldwide advancement of medical and scientific knowledge.
Salaries for MLTs vary, but are comparable to other allied health care professions. There is a huge demand right now for medical laboratory technologists, and it will only increase due to the number of retiring MLTs. Job prospects are excellent.
